Year 3 Class 10 Newsletter 27th November 2017

Date: 26th Nov 2017 @ 7:39am

Dear Parents,

Well, what a fantastic week that was!  We had such a great time developing new skills and applying skills we've learned in Maths, English, Science, Music and much more.  The children have worked so hard all week and I have been very proud of their efforts.

We started the week with our Computing session in our wonderful computer suite.  The children learned the importance of email safety and how to compose an email to a friend.  We will be writing more emails this week and sending them to our friends.  Please speak to your child about staying safe online - there is advice here

Our guitar skills are going from strength to strength and we learned another new chord this week. We now know D7 and the chord of C - great new skills!  The children listened well and were very keen to share their acheivements  with the whole class.  We enjoyed singing in our class on Friday learning a couple of my favourite songs.

During English we started our week learning our new spellings and I have to say I have been very impressed with the scores in the tests and the work in the children's books.  Thank you for supporting the children with their spelling homework.  We looked at the essential features of informal letters and then wrote our own letters to Om; the character from Stone Age Boy.

This week we will be looking at story writing and paying particular attention to the endings of stories and the skills authors use to keep us hooked on their books.  We will be starting to gather ideas for our own alternative endings to Stone Age Boy in the form of a flashback - look out for some writing from the children on here!

During maths we have developed our written methods of subtraction from using counters, to 100 squares, to expanded methods to the most efficient compact methods.  The children then had the opportunity to refine these methods and then apply them to real life problems. I have attached a few videos showing how we have calculated this week.

In the coming weeks we will be developing our mental and written multiplication skills and then using those skills when problem solving.  The children have been using a site called to further develop their efficiency in answering multiplication questions.  It is essential that the children know their tables inside out; so please support them when you can.  There is a browser called 'Puffin' for iPad and iPhone users that will allow the site to work.

We continued to develop our gymnastics routine this week and the children have enjoyed performing parts of it for their classmates.  Thank you for ensuring that the children had their PE kit - we had all of them this week!

Our RE sessions continued to focus on Mary, Mother of God and her journey to meet her cousin Elizabeth to tell her the wonderful news.  The children acted out parts of the story and then created a storyboard of her journey for their RE books. We will develop our thinking and understding of 'The Mystery of Incarnation.'

We had a great science session this week when we were looking how fossils are created over time.  We watched a fantastic video about Mary Anning and how she dedicated her life to fossils.  The vides we watched are available - here  We will learn more about fossils this week and develop a chronology of The Stone Age - look out for more pictures.

Thank you again for completing the children's homework with them this week.  The children should have received their comprehension and maths homework books on Friday for this week.  Thank you to the children who brought their books back as soon as they have finished - it really helps me.

We have our class assembly on Friday 8th December.  You are all most welcome to come along see the performance.

If you have any questions, please make sure you get in touch as soon as you can.  I'm always happy to help.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mr Chris Waterworth
