Image result for year 6 love keep calmWelcome back to school! We hope that you are refreshed and ready to begin a very busy and exciting year in Year 6!

This half term our key text will be 'The Land of Neverbelieve' by Norman Messenger. We will begin by developing narrative through character and setting description and will then move onto introducing some non-fiction genres including persuasion, non-chronological reports and recounts.

We will also be developing our understanding of spelling, grammar and punctuation rules throughout our English work. Our main areas of focus will include;

- Advancing sentence structure using different punctuation.

- Varying sentence lengths for effect.

- Developing vocabulary choices using synonyms.

- Using paragraphs and creating cohesion.

Our Maths learning this half term will focus upon number and place value. We will begin with reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers up to 10,000,000, rounding numbers to a required degree of accuracy and using negative numbers in context. We will then apply our learning through reasoning and problem solving activities in order to further deepen our understanding.

Our Science topics this half term will be 'The Animal Kingdom' and 'Evolution'. We will begin by describing how living things are classified into broad groups according to common characteristics and will identify similarties and differences we have observed. Through our Evolution topic we will recognise how living things have changed over time, how these living things adapt to their environment and how, in turn, this adaptation may lead to evolution.

We are really looking forward to welcoming you back to begin what is certain to be a very successful and exciting school year!
